Horses are very social animals. In the wild they live in herds so
they love company. They are great friends but you have to treat them
well. You and your horse will need to gain each others trust to have
a great friendship. You can form a bond by handling them frequently.
Be gentle, compassionate but firm. You must spend time with your
horse every day and let them smell your hand so they recognise your
scent. Pat your horse, groom your horse and let them eat from your
hand so that they get used to you and trust you. If you treat your
horse gently it will respond to your commands.
There are different names for
different genders of horses. A young female horse or pony under the
age of four is called a filly and an older female horse or pony is
called a mare. A young male horse or pony under the age of four is
called a colt and an older male horse is called a gelding or a
stallion if it is breeding.
