Banking

Students may open a bank account with the Commonwealth Bank.  Volunteer parents undertake student banking on Wednesday mornings.  A bank officer will talk to Kindergarten students early in the year and application forms will be sent home.

Before and After School Care

A before and after school care centre is operated by the Hornsby North Community Care Association Inc. in the school grounds 7am - 8.45am and 3.1Opm - 6.30pm.  Phone 9482 3484 for further information.

Book Club

Students are able to purchase books at their reading level through the Scholastic's Book Club.  This usually happens twice a term.  A parent committee processes the orders and the school benefits from bonus points gained which are exchanged for reading resources.

Canteen

A canteen operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Students ordering lunches should do so by 9.10am at the Canteen.  Money should be placed in a bag with the student's name, class and order clearly written on the bag.  Students may purchase from the canteen at recess.  The canteen is run by volunteer helpers under the direction of a Canteen Manager.  Additional help is always welcome and if you can assist please contact the Canteen Manager.  Click the picture for the current Canteen menu.

Support for Charities

Our school supports a number of charities including Stewart House, Junior Red Cross, and NSW Cancer Council.

Clothing Shop

The School Clothing Shop sells both new and second hand items of the School Uniform.  It is operated by volunteer parents on Thursday and Friday mornings during school terms, opening at 8.30am and closing about 9.30am. It is located at the canteen end of the Assembly Hall.  Second hand uniforms in good condition are accepted as donations for sale by the clothing shop.

Extra-Curricula Activities

The school provides opportunities for talented students to extend and enrich their learning either within the classroom or through extra-curricula activities.  These activities vary from time to time depending on the needs and talents of the students, but may include chess, debating, band, choir, dance, science (Lego Robotics), sport and languages.  Opportunities are also provided through participation in the Maths Challenge, Multi-cultural Public Speaking Competition and a variety of academic competitions.

Homework

The school has a homework policy which is available on request.  Parents need to provide a set time and place for children to do their homework and should read regularly with their children.  Please contact the teacher if you are concerned regarding homework expectations.

Library

All classes have a library lesson once a week during which they are taught about the library and literature.  They also use the library for research before school and at lunch times.  Students can borrow books before school (8.45am - 9.10am) and at lunch times (1.10pm - 1.35pm). Students should bring a library bag in which to carry the books they have borrowed.

Lunch and Recess

Children should take interesting and nutritious food for lunch and recess.  Kindergarten students should not be given too much and parents need to monitor what has been eaten by encouraging their children to bring uneaten food home.

As we have a number of students who are allergic to peanuts, this school is a PEANUT FREE SCHOOL.

Lunch box and drink bottles should be clearly labelled.

New Enrolments

We welcome enquiries about enrolling at our school.  Children who have turned five, or who will be turning five by the end of July in the year they wish to enrol are eligible for enrolment.  An orientation program for prospective Kindergarten students and their parents is held each October.  Please contact the school for exact dates.

Enquiries about transferring students from other schools are also welcomed.  However if the student does not reside within the school's drawing area, transfer is only possible if a place is available in the requested grade.  If the transfer is from another NSW Department of Education and Training school, a transfer certificate and proof of address is all that is required. If the transfer is from a non-government school or from an interstate school, the child's birth certificate or passport is required.  Students enrolling from overseas require passports with accredited visas, immunisation certificate and proof of address.

Immunisation:  Please ensure your child has been immunised before entering Kindergarten.  Parents will be asked to provide an immunisation certificate.

Parent Involvement

We believe that parents are partners in their children's education.  It is increasingly recognised that children benefit from a co-operative relationship between home and school and many parents find time to take part in some of our activities.

Parents are also invited to join the parent organisations which co-ordinate a number of fund raising and social functions throughout the year in support of the school.

PARENTS AND CITIZENS ASSOCIATION (P&C)
Meetings are held twice a term in Weeks 3 and 8 on Monday at 7.30pm.

Voluntary School Contribution Scheme

Each year the school seeks from parents a general school contribution fee.  Funds raised through this contribution are used to supplement educational resources.  Click the button to reach the parent pages.

Reporting to Parents

Reports
Reports are sent home at the end of each semester.  These reports include portfolios of each student's work.

Interviews with Parents
Should you feel that your child has any concerns related to school, do not hesitate to contact the class teacher, Assistant Principal or Principal.  Because of the heavy workload and many additional commitments of the staff, we ask that you arrange an interview at a mutually convenient time.

Teachers are committed to a full understanding of each child.  They welcome discussion with you about your child.  Formal interviews are held after the First Semester Report has been sent home.  These interviews, lasting about ten minutes, are a time for you to discuss the Report.

Grade Nights
A Grade Night is held on an evening early in Term 1. This is a valuable opportunity for parents to meet and talk with their child's teacher and to gain background knowledge about the class's activities.

Newsletter
The school's newsletter is sent home every Wednesday with the eldest child in the family.  It can also be read online and past newsletters are archived.

Travelling to and from School
Buses
Free bus passes are available to students in Years K, 1 and 2, and to those in higher grades who live more than 1.6km (radial distance) or 2.3km or more by the most direct practical walking route to the nearest entry point to the school.  To allow kindergarten students time to settle into school we recommend against bus travel in Term 1.

Bicycles
Bikes may be ridden to school by students in Year 4 and above with parent consent.  Bikes are to be secured during the day in the bike racks provided.  Helmets must be worn and bikes may not be ridden in the school grounds.  The school cannot accept responsibility for bikes.
