Italian

Students in Years K-4 at Hornsby North Public School are given Italian lessons on a weekly basis.  Their teacher is Signora Baitieri.  She emphasises both the Italian language and Italian culture with the intention for lessons to be enjoyable.

Class activities encourage oral use of language with the intention of students being able to converse in simple conversational language.

We play games to help us learn new Italian words and sentences.  Here the students in Kindergarten are playing Coccodrillo mangia.  The student has to jump on the correct colour or be eaten by the “coccodrilli” (the crocodiles).

Tu scendi dalle stelle, O Re del cielo,

E vieni in una grotta, Al freddo e al gelo

E vieni in una grotta, Al freddo e al gelo.

Oh Bambino mio divino,

Io ti vedo qui a tremar

O Dio beato;

Ah quanto ti costò, L'avermi amato!

ah quanto ti costò, L'avermi amato!

A te che sei del mondo il Creatore,

Mancano panni e fuoco, O mio Signore

Mancano panni e fuoco, O mio Signore

Caro eletto, Pargoletto, Quanto questa poverta,

Piu m'innamora,

Giacche ti fece, amor povero ancora

Giacche ti fece, amor povero ancora

In Italian lessons, Kindergarten students use computers to play games in Italian so that they can learn how to address people and use Italian numbers.

In Italian lessons, 4P have been looking at Italian cities.  They have labelled each of the buildings of the city, la Piazza (the Plaza), le vie (the streets) and le fontane (the fountains).  Rome was their inspiration.

Our first Italian lesson in Kindergarten was all about Italian foods.  We created a “gelato” and sang a song.

In Year 1, our Italian lessons have been based on our uniqueness.  “Two eyes, a nose and a mouth” a book by Roberta Grobel Intrater has inspired us to label and name our body parts, tell our age and to describe our hair and eyes.  We drew and labelled a monster.

Year 2 has used Eric Carle’s book “The Hungry Caterpillar” to learn about food and expressing likes and dislikes.  We’ve also looked at the life cycle of the “farfalla”.  The artwork showed dissections of foods.

Year 3 has made masks for “Carnevale”.  The plastic mask was covered in tissue and then decorated with glitter glue and permanent markers.   Carnevale is an Italian festival usually held in February.  A very famous Carnevale festival is held in Venice every year.

In Year 4, we have visited many Italian cities and have been TV weather presenters.  We also described the clothing we would wear that would be appropriate for the weather.
