Caterpillar

A caterpillar hatches from an egg. It lives on plants. It eats leaves. The caterpillar spins a cocoon. A pupa grows in the cocoon. The moth emerges. The moth hangs to dry its wings. Then there is a fully grown moth or butterfly. The female moth lays eggs.

Back to the Past Day

Year 1 had a drama day on the 18th of September at school.  First we had a photo. Then we did some writing with chalk. I liked that.

Next we did some weaving with pink and purple paper. After lunch we did some bush dancing that was fun. Finally we had some lemonade and scones.

THE RAINBOW FISH

a story by Jasmine 2C

The Rainbow Fish was the most beautiful fish in the ocean with his shiny dazzling scales.

One day a little blue fish asked the Rainbow Fish for one of his scales.  Rainbow Fish got very angry so the little blue fish told all of his friends.  Now Rainbow Fish was the loneliest fish in the ocean.  When Rainbow Fish came past all the other fish would turn away. One day Rainbow Fish told a starfish his troubles.  The starfish said, "I can't help you but if you go past the reef the wise octopus could help you."  So Rainbow Fish went to the cave.  The wise octopus emerged from the darkness.  He said, "The waves have told me your story.  This is my advice.  Give one of your scales to each fish.  You'll no longer be the prettiest fish, but you will discover how to be happy." Rainbow fish was puzzled.  "How could I be happy without my scales?" he said.  But the octopus had gone in a cloud of ink.  Just then a light fin touched his.  The little blue fish was back. he said, "Can I please have one small scale?"  Rainbow Fish thought to himself, then he carefully pulled out one of his scales.  He watched the little blue fish swimming back and forth.  Soon all the fish wanted one and Rainbow Fish gave all of the fish a scale.

Rainbow Fish felt so happy.  The other fish said, "Rainbow Fish, come and play with us."  Rainbow Fish said, "Here I come!" and off he went.

LESSONS AFLOAT by Phoebe 3B

On Wednesday 11th June Year Three went on an excursion called Lessons Afloat. First we got on the bus at 9.00am and I sat next to Ranea. When we got there we got on the ferry. I sat at the back with Molly L. On the ferry we sailed past the Opera House to Shark Island.

At Shark Island we looked around and I saw two sharks. Also I saw a lime, a dead crab and some broccoli. After Shark Island we had recess on the boat and then got off and walked to the Royal Botanical Gardens. When we were walking there we walked past my dad’s work CCA Coka Cola Amatil. At the Royal Botanical Gardens we had lunch and I sat with Simone B in 3W.

After lunch we had to walk through the Botanical Gardens to get to the art Gallery of NSW. We saw millions of bats on the way. They made a lot of noise. At the Art Gallery my group went in to a pitch black room then we herd a big … BOOM! All of us girls went running out of the room and Helen was trying to calm us down. Lots of other groups rushed in but all they could see was a movie. I was crying and I didn’t want to go back in to watch the movie. After all that we had another look till it was time to go. Back on the bus I sat near Helen. At school we were in time to get the newsletters and go home at 3.10pm

I loved going on Lessons Afloat for our excursion and I would love to do it again some day.

Pitter Patter

by Elizabeth 4F

Pitter Patter drip drop,

rain rain don’t stop.

I have a new umbrella,

with stripes so bright and hay,

And because it’s raining raining,

I’d like to try it out today.

So Pitter Patter drip drop,

rain rain don’t stop.

Please keep on pouring pouring down,

I want to walk all over town.

On Friday the 5/9/08 4C made ‘Tea Cups’ for Fathers Day. We had a lovely time making them and we hope all of the Dads, Grandfathers and Uncles had a fantastic Fathers Day. Below is the recipe for the ‘Tea Cups’

THE INDIAN ATTACK

A story by Ivan 5H

It was an amazingly quiet Sunday morning. Everyone was asleep except for Rob.  He was eight years old with brownish blonde hair. He had invited all of his best friends for a sleep over, but he just couldn’t sleep. Finally, after what seemed like ages Helen woke up. She was fifteen and acted more like a boy than any of the boys did. Than after an amount of time Tyroney woke up. He had blonde hair and was only ten. “Hey guys” muttered Rob happily, “Lets go to that forest next door.

Finally, after at least half an hour, they all agreed to go to the great forest. “Ahh guys,” thumbed Helen quietly, “come over here”. Then after a few steps the boys saw it too. It was the biggest mountain they had ever seen. It looked like ten giraffes shot by grow rays. “Lets climb it!” they all screamed as they ran at it. After a short amount of time they had made it to half way up the mountain when they discovered that there was some sort of mini hut. Then as quick as a flash Helen entered the house, only to find an angry Indian, and to make it worse, the Indian had a gun. Helen sprinted out of the house at that same moment. Finally, when the Indian got out of his house, the kids threw millions of rocks at him. Then, a giant war began (rock against gun) only to result in Rob getting shot. “Ahh!” He screamed as he fell off the mountain. Then, with the most tremendous splash he fell into some sort of muddy lake.

Suddenly, the Indian seemed to fall to his death. At that the other two kids sprinted down the mountain with all their might. Luckily, on their way down, Helen found two nice, long pieces of bamboo. Finally after an amount of time they found Rob. Amazingly he was still alive, but barely. With the bamboo Helen had found and some pieces of grass, the two kids made an eerie looking stretcher that worked just fine. On their way home, they saw the dead body of the Indian that nearly had their heads. For the next few days Rob was in hospital, but thankfully when he did come out, he was just fine.

SHOULD YEAR FOUR CHILDREN BE GIVEN HOMEWORK?

A discussion by Bianca 5H

Many people argue about whether Year Four children be given Home Work or not?

Some people believe Year Four children should be given Home work because it makes your school work easier as well as making you smarter and more capable of work. Another reason is we get better jobs in the future and are able to answer more questions. By making it simpler to understand we learn more and get better grades. You can get better skills if you have memorised more. You will have a better life, better job, and a better future.

But on the other hand……….. Some people believe that Year Four should not be given homework because it causes fights with parents and interferes too much with daily activities. Also we learn at school and  sometimes we have to stay up late to do it. This is not good.  Some say it’s really boring and too hard.  We also less fun and poor pets have no love. Sometimes we even forget to do things like take out the garbage.

So I recommend that Year Four children should not have homework for the sake of living.

THE ANGEL FALLS

A description by Oscar 5H

Cascading water crashes through the air like a destructive dragon, falling free like a leaf in autumn.  Crystal liquid crushing everything in its path and then shattering into a million mirrors.  Rivers that morph into soap bubbles when they rush off the edge of the rock face.

Jagged diamonds stand like sentinels out of the earth.  Colossal, brutal rocks slice through the rushing water like knives through bread.  Drastic concrete rocks, home to bellowing water.  Rocks that are as dangerous as hungry dragons, ready to pounce.

The Anzac Poem

By Felicia 6S

They departed

On the waiting boats that would take them to Gallipoli.

They arrived

With fear as friends fell dead around them from gun shots,

They fought

Day and night with determination and fear hoping that one day their country would be free.

They ate and drank

Bad food and water that only a fool would touch.

They dug trenches

Under ground that would keep them safe.

They carried

The wounded soldiers from danger to safety,

They got shot

By their enemies that were well prepared,

They ran and hid

In places that they hoped that were safe.

They surrendered

In the end to their crazy enemies and long lost friends.

They departed

In their boats that would bring them safely back home.

New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing at Anzac Cove, 25 April 1915.

A REVIEW OF "HATCHET" by Gary Paulsen

Hatchet is a book written by Gary Paulsen. It is about Brian, a 13yr old boy who is on a plane visiting his father. Brian’s parents had a divorce, so he lives with his mother in New York, and visits his father, who lives in Canada, in the holidays. While Brian is on his way to Canada, the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian is left to control the plane and try to land it without dying. He succeeds; crashing the plane into an L shaped lake. He survives the impact, and all he is left with is a hatchet his mother gave him before the trip.

Hatchet is a very descriptive book. Although the idea is very cliché, the author makes the story original and fresh. And although the book does get a little boring at times, the exciting parts are very well done.

I thought that the way Gary Paulsen about wrote Brian was very well done. He depicts his emotions with descriptive writing. While the whole book was very good, I found the ending looked rushed, and not really thought through, because it is very sudden and out of place, as well as cliché. Despite this setback, Hatchet is a well written little book.

This would be a good book for children, as it is short and not complex. Children from 10 to adults could read this. For adults it would be a breeze, and finished in at least 90 minutes.

"PEASANT REAPING CORN" by Vincent Van Gogh

Poor and wrinkly the middle aged man hobbled back to work.  His old figure is slouched with his heavy large left boot in front of the right.  Torn and tatty old clothes are held together by pieces of old string.  Eaten through, old wood tools, he cuts the corn plants with the sun blazing down on him.  Cuts and scabbed hands sting with infection.  Huge boots cover the small and dainty feet.  Vincent Van Gogh has shaded his sketch in the most beautiful way.  The shades show where the sun us shining from.  This sketch is one of a kind and tell its own special story.

WHAT IS RED?

   by Andrew 6S

Red is sunset, red is flame

The hot fire that you blame

Red is anger, red is blood

The loud noise when you thud

Red is a face when you can’t tie a lace

Red is Australia running through drought

Red is hate when you want to shout

Red is a heart burning with love

Red is the colour of a morning tart

Red is the eyes of an angry man

Wanting revenge on his old mate Sam

Red is a marking pen filled with ink

Red is the fire that makes you blink

Red is a dead leaf alling of a dying tree

Red is the colour

That we all see

AUTUMN

by Claire 6S

Autumn is rich coloured leaves

Autumn is a cold chilly breeze

Changing, growing, falling

Large, noisy, colourful

Autumn feels like the warm and shinning sun

Autumn sounds like a fire burning

Autumn smells like smoke and fire

Autumn makes me fill with joy

I think of warm open fires

Autumn is beautiful.
